Many consider Gandhi one of the greatest icons for peaceful presence in the midst of tumultuous times. How, indeed, do we stay connected to our inner sense of truth, fairness, integrity, and grace in the midst of uncertainty, or even chaos?
My sense is that Gandhi believed that peace is not something we create, but rather something we align to, atune to, harmonize with. As an aspect of the very nature that resides within us. Where any lack of inner peace is like darkness when something is blocking the light. Beliefs, stories, perspectives. Who do we think we are and what do we believe is happening.
One of your greatest freedoms
is how you respond to things.
This image was created at the south end of the Ferry Building in San Francisco where a relatively unknown sculpture of Gandhi resides in the middle of the parking lot. I’d come upon it unexpectedly, and was delighted to capture this perspective with the Bay Bridge in the background (especially before the additional ferry terminal went in making this image no longer possible!)

I’ve been co-creating with Mark (Hanson, the owner) for over a decade, so appreciating his attention-to-detail which surpasses my own. Each piece of art is individually printed, pressed, trimmed, and framed by hand using a beautiful FSC walnut wood from the East Coast… in Pennsylvania a few hours west from where I grew up. Printed on the back of the image is the title, date, activation, and signature.
